PAC Military Justice II Week 2 Practice Test

The essential function here is maintaining order, security, and smooth operation of the courtroom. A bailiff is part of every court-martial and acts to keep the proceedings running cleanly and safely. They start by bringing the court to order, often with an announcement like “All rise.” They assist the members of the court and other officers, helping with tasks as needed during the trial. They secure evidence, making sure exhibits are handled properly and safely. They keep spectators quiet and prevent disturbances, including ensuring no unauthorized devices—such as cameras, recorders, cell phones, or beepers—disrupt the proceedings. They also locate and bring in witnesses or court participants when required, and they pass messages between the court’s members and the Military Judge to facilitate communication. This combination of security, decorum, and operational facilitation is what defines the bailiff’s duties.

Observing and timing, budgeting and procurement, or acting as the lead prosecutor do not reflect the bailiff’s responsibilities. Those tasks belong to different roles within the court system.
